Let’s all be honest with ourselves – it’s the middle of the summer, Independence Day is drawing closer and closer, and all we really want to do is go on vacation. For you, that might mean hanging out with your family at the beach, reading a good book, or just sleeping in and eating tasty food. Or, at least, this is what we imagine.
The reality is, we work every day until the trip, taking care of ourselves and spending time with our family, friends, and clients, then we pack and get a late-night flight and check in to the hotel around midnight.
You spend the entire week forcing yourself to wake up and try new things, relax, or spend time with your family when you’re actually thinking about work or school and what’ll be waiting when you get home on the earliest flight out. And this is assuming you even GET a vacation. Am I right?

Here are 3 tips for you to take a vacation – physically and mentally:
- Get time off! This may seem obvious, but people work from home so often now that they simply pack up their briefcase and take it on their flight without realizing how much of a distraction it will be. Don’t bring your laptop on your personal vacation; that will give your boss an excuse to ask you to work from home. Take this time to yourself; you’ve earned it.
- Go back to the basics: sleeping and eating. I could write an entire article on this, but for travel, this is what you need to know. You are spoiling yourself. Take the afternoon flights, check in early and check out late. Get more than enough sleep. Treat yourself to gourmet food, and eat plenty of it. Pack snacks for when you’re hungry on the go. Eating and sleeping is the basis of your health, both physically and mentally.
- Take care of your family, but also care for yourself. You may be tempted to say “Yes” more often than usual on vacation, but don’t forget about yourself. There may be times when you want to rest alone, or take a walk by yourself. Don’t be afraid to say “Yes”, but if you feel weary, think about saying “No” once in a while. It’s not a bad thing, and your family will be okay with it.
