Stocks, Leadership, and Women, Oh My!

Fifty years ago, people thought it was crazy for women to even consider holding a leadership position. They traditionally held a spot as wives, mothers, and homemakers. Cooking food and caring for their children was the norm.

The passage of Roe vs. Wade in 1971 was a huge leap, but it still took many years for men to truly take the law seriously.

Unequal Opportunities for Women

Many argue that oppression still exists, especially as women speak out against unfairness in society. What do the facts say? Here are some collected from Forbes and the Pew Research Center:

  • Women make up only 16% of those in the military overall
  • Women hold approximately 52% of professional-level jobs, but only 5% are CEOs
  • Out of 2018’s Fortune 500 companies, only 24 had female CEOs
  • Although America has only ever considered 1 woman for president, 15 women are currently considered the head of state or government worldwide
  • 56 out of 141 countries have had a female head of state or government in the past 50 years
  • In 2016, 27% of women were stay-at-home mothers; 29% of them had attained higher education.
  • In 2016, 7% of men identified as a stay at home parent, 25% of whom had attained higher education.

Don’t these statistics seem a little unfair?

FWOMX

Recently, a stock opened up on Fidelity Investments. It’s called FWOMX, or Fidelity Women’s Leadership Fund. It consists of companies with women in high leadership positions. FWOMX opened for purchase on May 1. It does not require a minimum to invest or a fee to purchase. It’s considered a large blend of stocks with medium risk.

Since I purchased the stock in late May, it’s risen by 3.44%. At the time, this was certainly a risky purchase, as the stock was extremely new. But I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself.

As more women stand up in advocacy, leadership, and even in stocks, throughout the world, I cannot wait to see what change will come about.
